WD My Passport 6TB Offers Large Storage In A Compact Form

With the advent of cloud storage you might be forgiven if you thought that physical storage solutions are no longer the fad. However, you cannot deny that storage drives are equally important, especially if you are not sure about the digital security of your data. Western Digital (WD) is a pioneer in this space and its popular My Passport lineup has catered to consumers and businesses for decades.

The company now has one of the largest-sized hard disk drives in the My Passport series. Yes, this is the SSD or Solid State Drive era that gives you compact drives with faster speeds but their cost prohibits people from buying the bigger capacity version. This is where the traditional HDDs like the My Passport come to the rescue by offering 6TB storage in a compact form for around Rs 15,000.

Compact And Durable

The My Passport 6TB version is just like the other options that you get from the brand. The solid casing combined with lightweight dimensions give the 6TB storage the right kind of purpose and functionality. One might say the width of the drive won’t get any awards but the technology warrants this design and most of us can live with that compromise. We got the unit in an orange-grey dual tone shade which looks good and peppy.

The drive weighs 210 grams which makes you forget that you have 6TB of storage in your palms. WD has tested the drive in rough and cold conditions to ensure you don’t lose data because of basic issues.

Big But Not Fast

The 6TB storage available on the My Passport drive will give you a total of 5.45TB usable space on the device. The drive supports microUSB B port that pairs with the USB 3.0 port to connect on the PC or Mac. WD does have a USB C variant in the market and we feel that the company should completely junk the former, even if you have a USB C adapter with this version.

The main reason why we don’t like seeing the microUSB B port in 2024 is the lack of high-speed transfers supported by the technology, which the USB C can easily offer.

And because of this, the 6TB HDD drive delivers read and write speeds of around 110MB/sec and during our tests we got an average data transfer speed of 106MB/sec which isn’t the fastest out there but that’s the con of using a hard disk. We would like the next version to support USB C to C connectivity which should improve the speeds drastically.

Making It Modern

WD has made sure that the security of the 6TB HDD drive is not compromised by any means. We already talked about the durability of the drive but you also get 256-bit encryption support which gives you peace of mind for the data.

You can use it with smartphones using the bundled USB C adapter but the power input could be a challenge for these devices to handle. Still it is good to have that in the coffers.

WD My Passport 6TB has the right attributes for a solid hard disk that offers durability but still provides ample storage in a compact form factor. You get a solid value for the money, and if high transfer speeds are not the priority, this is a good option to consider in the market.
