Google Could Finally Make This Big Change For The Next Pixel Flagship
The Google Pixel 9 series has made a big impact in 2024, with its impressive design, advanced AI features and even a smaller Pro model. But now, attention is shifting to the next big thing, the Pixel 10 series. Latest reports suggest that Google may be switching from its usual modem suppliers, Samsung and Qualcomm, to MediaTek.
For years, Google has used the Samsung Exynos modems. Earlier, Pixel models had issues with cellular performance, the Pixel 9 saw improvements. Now, reports claim Google plans to use a MediaTek modem for its upcoming phones.
As per Android Authority, Google's move to switch modem suppliers seems connected to its decision to shift chip production for the Tensor G5 chip to TSMC's advanced process. Although Qualcomm has its Snapdragon X75 modem that was an option, MediaTek secured the partnership, promising top-tier performance with its new M85 modem. For context, “M70 supported 3GPP Release 15 5G specification, M80 upgraded to Release 16, so it’s safe to assume M85 will support Release 17 or even newer."
As of now, very little information is known about the new T900 modem, other than that it’s based on MediaTek’s M85 generation modem technology. Even less is known about their previous T800 modem, as no device has used it yet.
Google is fully aware that heating issues and battery life are major problems in Tensor-based Pixel phones, mostly due to the modems. After the issues seen in the Pixel 6 devices, the tech giant won't let something similar happen again. Battery life is a major priority for the company, which could be why MediaTek’s modem is being considered. While it may not offer the same performance as Qualcomm modems, the cost could have also played a main role in Google choosing MediaTek over Qualcomm for this model.
Until the Pixel 9 series, Google has used the Samsung 5G modem for its devices. But according to the report, that will be changing with the launch of Pixel 10 series next year. One of the key advantages of the new T900 modem is its compatibility with various networks, with improved power efficiency compared to earlier models.
